Equiano, The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Oladuah Equiano. . .

There's nothing better than travel narratives!

The headnote about this reading tells you that Equiano's story is one of the first pieces of literature belonging to a new and important genre: the slave narrative. During the 18th century, slavery was the nightmarish reality of thousands upon thousands of people. At the same time, people were traveling the world in unprecedented numbers, and the contact with foreign cultures provided fantastic fodder for writers. People perceived the traditions, customs, and lifestyles of others - something that today we may take for granted - very differently during the 18th century. Their writings often disclose more about their culture than the culture of the people they encounter, observe and write about.

As you read Equiano's account, keep track of his progress on the map - that guy got around. Also think of some of the ways in which you have experienced and reported something foreign. That reflection may help you frame your thinking about this account.
