Tasks for Week 01

Each week you will have a variety of lesson-related tasks. This week your responsibilities are both technical and content-oriented. On the technical side, you must become familiar with the operation of WebCT and its tools, plus you need to have achieved a certain level of tech-savvy. That is, in order to be successful in this course, it's essential that you are comfortable with basic operations (e.g., saving files in a given file type, uploading/submitting and downloading files, navigating discussions). On the content side, you must prepare to read intensively, conduct independent research and writing, and engage new ideas and difficult readings. Read this page carefully to see precisely what is required of you over the next week.

Please take some time to complete the following tasks that will help you become oriented to the course environment:

  • Attend a WebCT orientation session if possible. If it’s not possible for you to attend a session read the following tutorials
  • Familiarize yourself with the links in the Course Menu. Follow the Dropbox/grades link to upload, submit, and download my comments about your writing assignments. Follow the Course packet link at any time to check policies, assignments, or other details about the class. Follow the Grammar Guide link for information about common grammatical errors and proofreading marks. Follow the Discussion link for access to the class discussion area. Follow the Bedford homepage link to take the assigned quizzes.
  • Familiarize yourself with the organization of the content of the class. The Homepage has links to detail pages about reading assignments, quizzes, and deadlines. Major events and deadlines are listed here, but ALWAYS consult the detail pages for up-to-date information.
  • Get in the habit of logging in regularly. Follow the link to each week's lesson at least twice a week - it's in your best interest to be aware of new information is added or deadlines shift.

Please read the following:

  • Download and read the Course Packet. The Course packet contains the syllabus and policies, the tentative schedule for the class, and all writing assignments. You may want to print the Course packet - you'll be referred to it often.
  • Read from Volume 4 of the Bedford Anthology:
    • The Introduction to Volume 4, pages 1-10
    • Europe: The Age of Enlightenment, pages 11-17
    • Moliere's Tartuffe, pages 17-87

Please do the following by the end of the week (Sunday @ 11:55PM MST):

  • Read others’ introductions and introduce yourself in the Discussion
  • Take the quiz over Tartuffe. Go to the Bedford homepage and follow the links: LitQuiz>Book 4>Europe: The Age of Enlightenment>Moliére, Tartuffe

When you have questions about the reading, post to the Questions topic in the Discussion area. If you see questions from your peers that you are able to answer, please do so!
